When a local member of The Arthur Ransome Society (TARS) took over the running of its library in 2011, a home was needed for its several hundred books. The two adjoining rooms on Mid Landing in Lochvale House were ideal for the purpose, and even the name was appropriate, as Arthur Ransome was, among many other things, a keen sailor. Indeed, countless readers of the twelve books in his ‘Swallows and Amazons’ series for children have actually learned to sail just by reading them.
The 2000-odd adult and junior members worldwide, however, have many reasons for being interested in his life and works, and the library reflects those in full measure. The books are for loan only to members, either by visiting the library, at regional and national events, or by post.
Pick up a leaflet in the foyer or follow this link to our website, www.arthur-ransome.org.uk, to find out more about both Arthur Ransome and TARS, and perhaps you’ll be tempted to join a very lively and friendly society.
